The Ultimate Guide to Retinol: How to Look Younger and Eliminate Wrinkles and Acne

Tired of wrinkles and acne? Confused about retinol? Read Dr. Koo's Skincare guide for everything you need to know about retinol to treat signs of aging, acne, dark spots, and wrinkles.

What is Retinol?

By now if you're onย Dr Kooย Skincareย page researching retinol, you most likely know that retinol is the one magicย ingredientย with the most science and data to remedy almost every skin woe fromย hyperpigmentationย (dark spots),ย acne, enlargedย pores,ย wrinkles,ย fine lines, to roughย skin textureย andย anti-aging. It can act as anย antioxidant, increaseย cell turnoverย andย collagen production.ย But what exactly is retinol?ย

Retinol is an over theย counterย version of aย RETINOID. Retinol like allย retinoidsย are allย in theย Vitamin Aย family (derivativesย ofย Vitamin A). Retinol must be converted to the activeย ingredientย retinoic acid inside skin cells for all the above magic ofย anti-agingย andย complexionย smoothing to occur.

Retinol, however, is not the same asย Retin-Aย or TRETINOIN which are prescriptionย retinoids.ย Retin-Aย is a trade name for a lowย doseย TRETINOIN. Both Retin A and TRETINOIN are also in theย Vitamin Aย family BUT are prescription only and may cause significantย dryness,ย irritation, andย peelingย for retinol novices or those withย sensitive skinย or skin of color.ย

Retinol is still the strongest version of the over theย counterย retinoids, such as retinaldehyde and retinyl palmate. It also has a very safe use profile and may be more effective for allย skin typesย and hence better tolerated for a nightly skinย routine. The key is to maintain a consistentย routineย with theย formulaย suited for yourย skin type.ย

What Does Retinol Do? The Science Behind Retinol!

Retinol productsย must first be converted to retinoic acid, the activeย ingredient, within the skin cell (keratinocytes) to improveย skin elasticity,ย uneven skin tone, and lessenย acneย andย wrinkles. Retinol must bind to retinol binding proteins within dermis cells to be converted to retinoic acid.ย  Retinol vs Free Radicals

To achieve theย anti-agingย andย antioxidantย effects, retinol travels deep into the dermis and attaches to skin cell (keratinocytes) receptors stimulating theirย cell turnoverย andย collagen production. It also captures free radicals created by UVA and UVB rays, pollution, and other environmental aggressors thereby improving "plumpness" and firmness.ย

The bottom line is the reduction in appearance ofย fine lines,ย wrinkles, and enlargedย pores. Retinol also has an exfoliating effect on the skinโ€™s surface that can further improve texture andย skin tone.

Collagen Cell Turnover

Retinol can also help treatย acneย and related scarring with its skin brightening properties. The increasedย cell turnoverย helps preventย poreย congestion andย breakouts.ย

Finally, retinol has also been shown to balance your skinย moistureย and ceramide levels improving itsย skin barrierย function.ย With all the above proven effects, it is no wonderย dermatologistsย and plastic surgeons recommend retinol as THE mustย ingredientย for aย night creamย or night timeย routine.ย

Retinol Vs Retinoid

There is often confusion between these terms. Aย retinoidย is the broader category of chemicals that regulate cell function.ย Vitamin Aย is aย retinoid.ย Vitamin Aย is a fundamentally important vitamin necessary for cell growth and differentiation. Its effects are easily observed during topical use with improvements inย skin texture,ย wrinkles, andย pores.ย

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approvedย Vitamin Aย as the first agent for anti-wrinkleย andย anti-agingย effects. Retinol is a very safe type (derivative) ofย Vitamin A. Once it is converted to retinoic acid, it can achieve the same effects ofย Vitamin A. Retinol is among the most effective substances that can slow the aging process.ย

Retinol promotes skin cell proliferation, strengthens the protective function of the epidermis, limitsย moistureย loss, protects collagen against degradation andย squelch free radical superoxide activity.

All of the above makes retinol a magical skin saving, youth preservingย ingredientย for aย skincareย routineย and a savior forย acne-prone skinย breakouts.ย

How Often Should You Use Retinol?

Dermatologistsย and plastic surgeons recommendย using retinolย consistently every night if tolerated by yourย skin type. The key to retinol's success forย anti-agingย benefits lies in the nightly consistent use to removeย dead skin cellsย and stimulateย cell turnover. Theย formulaย of yourย retinol productย is CRITICAL for efficacy and how often you will be able toย use retinol.ย Your residence ofย New York Cityย versus Denver will also make a difference because of the seasonal humidity and temperature. Your specific retinol formulation will make all the difference whether you can use it as a nightlyย routineย or not.ย

Will Retinol Cause Irritation If I Have Sensitive Skin?

The retinolย formulaย andย ingredientsย will 100% determine if you can use the retinol. Typically retinolย formulasย that areย fragrance-free, containย hyaluronic acid,ย vitamin F,ย vitamin C,ย peptidesย and other clean supporting vitamins andย moisturizersย make theย best retinol creamsย and serums. Typicallyย sensitive skinย and skin of color will not tolerate prescription retinols (tretinoin), even if it isย retin-a. A blended, balanced,ย capsuleย retinol may all benefitย sensitive skin, retinol novices, or skin of color (dark or very fair). If you haveย sensitive skin, never start with aย high-dose retinoid serumย or cream.ย Slowly build up your nightlyย routineย to the retinol strength needed for your skin age and type.ย

Can I Use Retinol if I Am Pregnant or Planning to Become Pregnant, or Am Nursing?

Dermatologistsย and plastic surgeons fromย New York Cityย to Paris agree that topical use of RETINOL during pregnancy merely exists as a theoretical concern.ย However, the above distinctions between TRETINOIN,ย VITAMIN A, and RETINOL must be carefully dissected and adhered to.ย Vitamin Aย is a fundamentally important vitamin needed for the growth and differentiation of cells, and its effects are easily observed during topical administration via improvements inย skin texture,ย wrinkles, and skin damage.ย Whenย Vitamin Aย is topically delivered in the form of Retinol, it is (and must be) enzymatically converted to Retinoic Acid to act on specific skin receptors. Such as the countless mechanisms of wonder in the skin, this necessary conversion allows forย preciseย control of the levels of Retinoic Acid generated and prevents an excess that could have negative health effects (to mom or baby).ย Thus, one can regard Retinol as an inactivated form ofย Vitamin Aย and unable to inflict any harm during pregnancy.

Prior toย using retinolย during pregnancy, the recommendation is to READ theย ingredientsย and concentrations CAREFULLY.ย

Many specific formulations, including Dr Koo's Medical Grade Retinol adhere to the strict safety standards set forth by CA Prop 65 to limitย Vitamin Aย topical application to 8000 IU per day during pregnancy.ย Consequently, no products in the Dr. Kooย Skincareย routineย contain greater than 8000 IU of Retinol.ย While this approach is endorsed as safe, the most conservative option is to forgo use of Retinol during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Doesย Retinol Prevent Wrinkles & Fine Lines?

Yes, yes, and yes. HOWEVER, you must also participate AND use daily sunscreen 30-50 spf, not smoke, get adequate sleep, exercise, and try to eat nutritional foods. Simple right? NOT.ย

If you use the appropriateย doseย andย formulaย of retinol in a consistent nightlyย routine, cleanse your face appropriately for yourย skin typeย and needs, give your skin adequateย moistureย treatments, and topicalย vitamin C,ย vitamin A,ย vitamin Fย and vitamin K serums, you will 100% without a doubt slow the aging curve and minimize and even preventย wrinklesย andย dark spots.ย

Does Retinol Help With Acne?

Eitherย retinol creamย orย retinol serumย will lessen and shortenย acneย breakouts. The importance is theย doseย andย formulaย of the retinol. For the most effective antiย acneย treatment, use a buffered, pH-balanced retinol, appropriate cleanser for yourย skin type, and a light water basedย moisturizerย to prevent cloggingย pores. Retinol used in conjunction with aย Vitamin C,ย Vitamin F,ย niacinamide, andย hyaluronic acidย can have a lightening effect onย dark spotsย left byย acneย scarring.ย

Does retinol shrink your pores?

Indeed, retinol can lessenย poresย by exfoliatingย dead skin cellsย preventingย poresย from clogging Retinol also increasesย cell turnoverย remodeling the skin and tightening theย pores.ย

Is Retinol an Antioxidant?ย

Yes, retinol acts as anย antioxidantย with its ability to neutralize free radicals generated by UV rays, pollution and toxins that disrupt ourย skin barrier. Free radicals can cause skin cancers and disrupt matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). MMPs are proteins that act as the traffic controllers of our physiological processes such as bone remodeling, immunity, angiogenesis (new blood vessel production), and wound healing.ย Disrupted MMPs have led to inflammation, cancers, and arthritis.ย

Isย Vitamin Aย the Same as Retinol?

Retinol is a member of the larger Vitamin Aย family. It is the strongest over theย counterย form ofย Vitamin Aย that has been FDA approved for skinย anti-agingย treatment. There are many forms ofย Vitamin A, retinol is the strongest over theย counterย form ofย Vitamin Aย used to lessenย fine lines,ย wrinkles,ย pores, andย acneย breakouts.ย

Does the Retinol Formula Really Matter?

Theย ingredientsย and theย formulaย is 1000% the heart of any retinol. Make sure it is fragrance free. It doesn't need to beย veganย unless that is your preference but it does need to contain a strong enoughย doseย for your skin age andย wrinkleย level. For optimal results it should contain or you should also use an additional serum containingย vitamin F, vitamin K,ย vitamin C,ย niacinamide, andย hyaluronic acid.ย

Do I Need a Moisturizer With My Retinol?ย

Yes, because the retinol can dry your skin especially during cold temperatures and low humidity. Additionally, the better yourย skin barrierย function (level ofย moisture), the slower and flatter your aging curve progresses.
